Dear Parent,
Your son or daughter is assigned to my Current World Problems class for this term. I enjoy having her/him in my class, and will do my best to fulfill their expectations as well as your expectations for this class in Current World Problems. Please read the class syllabus that I have prepared for this class and contact me with any concerns or any comments you would care to share. If there is anything I should know about your son/daughter that will help make our relationship as a teacher and student more effective, please contact me.
Having your son/daughter attend class daily is necessary for them to have success in this class. I am asking you to please have your son/daughter in class every day unless they are sick or there is a serious emergency. Last term, September 2001 to January 2002, I had 486 absences in 3 classes with 75 students. These absences required a lot of time helping each absent student "catch up" with their studies that took away from time I could have spent working with students who are in attendance or designing better lessons. Establishing honest and sincere attitudes about attendance, responsibility, and learning will lead to success in this class. I would appreciate your help in having your son or daughter in school every day possible.
I am available to meet with you at school, over the phone, or an arranged meeting if you would like to talk to me about your son/daughter, the class, my teaching style, or anything pertinent. I arrive at school about 6:00 a.m. and a morning meeting is possible. I will also meet in the evening if this is more convenient for you. After school is also acceptable.
For many parents this letter and syllabus will be our only contact, and I would appreciate it if you would read the syllabus, sign the signature space below, and have your son/daughter return the section below the "cut" line to me as soon as possible.
