Along with a number of veterans who were honored by Omak students on Veterans Day was one active member of the military who attended an assembly with his daughter at North Elementary – thanks to the miracles of modern technology. Major Dave Haigh is serving in Iraq, but he was there, “live” via the Internet. Dave’s wife Marissa brought her computer to school so their daughter Rowan, who is in kindergarten, could share the event with her dad. His image was projected on a large screen allowing other students could see him as well. It was 11:30 p.m. his time.
“It melts my heart to be able to still be a part of Rowan's life while I am deployed to the war in Iraq,” Major Haigh wrote in an e-mail to North Principal Susan Bell. He is also scheduled to participate in Rowan’s parent-teacher conference
“I just hope the dust storms and mortar attacks allow it to happen,” he wrote. “We've been lucky so far … First I got to watch Rowan's karate belt test, then be at her Veterans Day assembly and now the conference. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing my daughter and me to connect on this level. It is so hard to not be there for her so this helps ease the sting to the heart. You and your school are true patriots!!!”
